Frogfish are fascinating and bizarre-looking creatures found in tropical and subtropical waters, including Mauritius.
They belong to the anglerfish family (Antennariidae) and are known for their incredible camouflage abilities, often blending seamlessly with sponges, corals, or rocks.
Unique Features of Frogfish:
- Camouflage Experts: They change color and texture to mimic their surroundings, making them nearly invisible to predators and prey.
- Luring Mechanism: They have a modified dorsal spine (illicium) that acts like a fishing rod with a lure (esca) at the tip, which they wiggle to attract prey.
- Lightning-Fast Hunters: Unlike most fish, they don’t chase their food; instead, they strike in less than a millisecond, swallowing their prey whole.
- Odd Movement: Instead of typical swimming, frogfish “walk” on the ocean floor using their pectoral fins. Some even use jet propulsion by expelling water from their gills.
Where to Find Frogfish in Mauritius?
